As a woman who is presented with this negative aspect of the media every day, I most definitely want to thank you for choosing this to write about. I think that we are presented with unrealistic expectations that we are expected by many to meet and even exceed, which in this case is simply not possible and not achieved in a healthy manner by some who actually do achieve it. I think that it is important to acknowledge that we are largely judged based on our appearance and that some major aspects of our lives depend on it. All of which is perpetuated by the media.
I believe there is a development link that is missed (at some point) when kids spend hours in front of a screen or texting. “Let’s pretend” is a game that requires imagination and if kids miss interacting with other kids pretending to be pirates searching for treasure or building a fort with cardboard boxes they will never know that they can make a difference. Working with other kids building a fort they learn social skills without realizing it. They learn to work together for a common goal. No computer screen can teach or help kids to make that connection.
