An interesting read, though I would have to agree with Mrs Jones when she says the author ignores the “tendency of the Federal government to attach albatrosses of regulation to every dollar”. The political reality is that this proposal is not in any way bi-partisan. Conservatives are ideologically opposed to government takeover of our healthcare. The left-leaning attitude and the pro single-payer echo chamber that this site pays host to may cloud that up a little bit. A true bi-partisan focus (at least for the time-being) is affordable healthcare. The AHCA may not do that, but I have seen little discussion here about the fact that the ACA is in a death spiral and that budget reconciliation of the ACA is the only thing the current administration is capable of doing right now, since there is not one Democrat in the Senate (let alone 8) who will break rank and vote on a true repeal and replace of the ACA. I would like to see a bill that includes the reforms that the President campaigned on, such as mandating price transparency in the healthcare industry and allowing insurance companies to compete with each other over state lines. These measures would drive competition, increase choice, and make healthcare more affordable–something which the Affordable Care Act absolutely failed to do. I’m not saying that I would never approve of single-payer, but our healthcare system has produced one of the best in the world and I would like to see how far we can go with it before throwing the baby out with the bathwater and making the irreversible plunge into a single payer system.
